Protective Effects of Extracts from Polygonum Hydropiper L on Ethanol-Induced Acute Gastric Mucosal Lesions

Abstract: Introduction: Free radicals and oxidative stress play a central role in the generation and development of acute gastric mucosal lesions (AGML). Traditional Chinese medicine has its unique effect in removing oxygen free radicals and reducing gastric mucosa injury. Polygonum hydropiper L is extensively used as a traditional Chinese herbal medicine for treating gastrointestinal diseases in China, the reports shows that it possess various pharmacological activities, especially antioxidant and anti-inflammatory pro… Show more

“…2018 ), and acute gastric mucosal injury of rats caused by ethanol (Ren et al. 2018 ). The mechanism of treatment of E. coli diarrhea may be related to reducing the release of inflammatory factors in intestinal tissues, improving the intestinal mucosal barrier and intervening with TGF-β/Smad signal transduction.…”

“…This extract can inhibit neutrophil infiltration, decrease proinflammatory factor levels (such as TNF-a and IL-1b), and increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes, as indicated by a molecular pharmacology study (12). We previously showed that P. hydropiper water extract has a preventive effect on gastric mucosa injury (13), and further study showed that the effect of ethanol extract was obviously superior to that of water. However, the mechanisms of P. hydropiper ethanol extract in the treatment of gastric illness remain unknown.…”
