Protective effects of Fraxinus xanthoxyloides (Wall.) leaves against CCl4 induced hepatic toxicity in rat

Abstract: BackgroundLeaves and root bark of Fraxinus xanthoxyloides Wall. (Oleaceae) are used locally for the treatment of jaundice, malaria and pneumonia. Decoction of stem, twigs and bark is used in pain, internal injuries, rheumatism and in bone fracture. In this investigation we have evaluated the methanol extract of leaves for its hepatoprotective potential against CCl4 induced hepatic injuries in rat.MethodsPowder of F. xanthoxyloides leaves was extracted with methanol (FXM) and subjected for the determination of … Show more

“…According to previous studies, treatment with SLY improved liver enzyme activity, which is an indicator of liver function characteristics (23). In a study, SLY reduced ROS production as a result of CCl4 administration and thus prevented liver damage (24). Accordingly, in our study, these biochemical changes significantly improved the toxicity of VPA after SLY treatment.…”

“…The antioxidant capacity of natural products is generally associated with the content of polyphenolic compounds in their composition (35). Among other constituents, BS oleo-gum resin is rich in pentacyclic terpenoids that exhibited anti-inflammatory effects by targeting multiple pathways in a range of disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, bronchial asthma, osteoarthritis and cancer (12).…”

“…Therefore, decreased GSH level is a complementary indicator of the extent of liver injury. Serum ALT and AST levels increase significantly in CCl 4 -induced liver injury in rats, whereas GSH levels significantly decrease 15 . Galloyl anhydride from Hypericum perforatum significantly increases serum GSH levels to prevent oxidative stress-induced rat liver injury 16 .…”
