Protective Effects of Tao-Hong-Si-Wu Decoction on Memory Impairment and Hippocampal Damage in Animal Model of Vascular Dementia

Abstract: Tao-Hong-Si-Wu decoction (TSD) as a traditional chinese medicine (TCM) has been developed to treat thrombotic diseases for hundreds of years, and vascular dementia (VD) is a cognitive dysfunction syndrome caused by cerebral embolism. In this study, the protective effect of TSD on memory impairment and brain damage in rat model of VD induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was investigated. The study showed that rats in MCAO treatment with TSD for 14 days significantly improved behavioral function, i… Show more

“…These results suggest that caffeine may be beneficial to cognitive processes related to response selection and inhibition. Higher-level cognitive brain functions appeared to be improved by the administration of caffeine (Han et al, 2015 ; Satterfield et al, 2018 ). By utilizing an electrophysiological technique, the most notable results of the present study were concerning changes to the P2 component.…”

“… 16 Pyramidal cell count was conducted using a light microscope (Nikon H600L, Melville, New York, USA) at 400x magnification. Cell count and pictures were taken of five different fields that were randomly chosen by the system 17 using a 300-megapixel DS Fi2 digital camera and a Nikon Image System image processor (Nikon, Melville, New York, USA).…”

“…Male Sprague Dawley rats (180-230 g, SPF grade) were obtained from the Experimental Animal Center of Anhui Medical University by Animal Experiments of Anhui university of Chinese medicine. All rats were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital during all surgical procedures to minimize suffering, and the MCAO and sham surgeries were performed as previously described [ 15 ]. Four days after MCAO, the left hemispheres were collected and immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen.…”
