Kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) is a superb nutritional source of phenolic compounds that are beneficial in the prevention of different diseases. The main goal of the current study was to estimate the oxidative activity and compare the effect of the ethanol extract of this fruit's peel and flesh on pancreatic cancer against pancreatic cancer and in vitro 2, 2-azobis-2-amidinopropane dihydrochloride (AAPH) erythrocytes hemolytic oxidative damage. Firstly, HPLC was utilized to identify the phenolic compounds in each extract that showed that p-coumaric acid & ferulic acid (in the peel), syringic acid & cinnamic acid (in the flesh) were the most abundant. Concerning the anti-cancer effect, flesh extract exhibited more cytotoxic impact as detected by the reduction of PANC-1 cell line viability with IC 50 of 232.89 µg/ml contrasted with the IC 50 of the peel extract (556.60 µg/ml). Relative to ascorbic acid, both kiwi extracts have been considerably successful in diminishing hemolysis, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and GSH levels of AAPH-induced RBCs. Interestingly, with 80 μg/ml, the ethanol peel extract returned the TBARS and GSH levels to the normal level of RBCs (0.022 and 2.86 nmole/mg hemoglobin, respectively).

To evaluate the antioxidant activity of flavonoids extracted from Chinese herb mulberry leaves (ML), flavonoids from mulberry leaves (FML) were extracted and purified by using ultrasonic-assisted enzymatic extraction and D101 macroporous resin. Using LC-MS/MS-Liquid Chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry analysis, hesperidin, rutoside, hyperoside, cyanidin-3-o-glucoside, myricitrin, cyanidin, and quercetin were identified, and NMR and UV were consistent with the verification of IR flavonoid characteristics. The antioxidant activity of FML has also been evaluated as well as the protective effect on 2,2 0-azobis (2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH)-induced oxidative stress. The results showed that FML exhibited powerful antioxidant activity. Moreover, FML showed dose-dependent protection against AAPH-induced sheep erythrocytes’ oxidative hemolysis. In the enzymatic antioxidant system, pretreatment with high FML maintained the balance of SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px; in the non-enzymatic antioxidant system, the content of MDA can be effectively reduced after FML treatment. This study provides a research basis for the development of natural products from mulberry leaves.

Pomelo sponge layer (PSL) had been considered as a potential source of soluble dietary fiber (SDF), while they were mostly disposed of as waste. To promote high-value utilization of pomelo wastes, this study extracted SDF from PSL of six varieties of pomelo, and their physicochemical, structural and functional properties were investigated. Results indicated that all PSL-SDFs showed good physicochemical and functional properties. Among them, PSL-SDF from grapefruit (GRSDF) showed better water holding capacity and swelling capacity, whereas Shatian pomelo PSL-SDF and Guanxi pomelo PSL-SDF had the highest thermal stability and oil holding capacity, respectively. Furthermore, compared with other PSL-SDFs, GRSDF displayed the lowest hydrolysis degree coupled with the best antioxidant and probiotic growth-promoting abilities. Finally, the correlation analysis showed that multiple beneficial effects of PSL-SDFs were markedly associated with their molecular weight and the concentrations of total phenolic, total flavonoids, rhamnose, galacturonic acid, glucose and arabinose. Collectively, these findings contributed to a better understanding of the physicochemical and functional properties of SDFs extracted from different PSLs, which provided a scientific basis for the development of PSL-SDFs into functional foods.
