Protective effects of the flavonoid fraction obtained from pomelo fruitlets through ultrasonic-associated microwave extraction against AAPH-induced erythrocyte hemolysis

Abstract: Pomelo fruitlet is a side-product of pomelo, and this study aimed to extract the antioxidative flavonoid compounds from pomelo fruitlets with high efficiency through ultrasonic-associated microwave methods.

“…It may be related to the identified antioxidant phenolic compound, ellagic acid, which is naturally synthesized in plants as a protectant against infections and pests (Vattem & Shetty, 2005). This study highlighted the positive cellular anti-oxidative abilities of kiwifruit for the first time, which had previously been documented by other plants extracts as mulberry leaves (Choi et al, 2013), pomelo fruit (Wang et al, 2019), and osthole as an active component of Cnidium monnieri (Rashidpoura et al, 2021).…”

“…The antioxidant effect of flavonoids is explained by the direct inhibition of AAPH free radicals in erythrocytes, thereby reducing the level of antioxidant-related enzymes and metabolites [ 27 , 39 ]. MDA is one of the important end-products of lipid peroxidation, which affects the structure and function of cell membranes by inducing cross-linking of protein-free amino groups in cell membranes, ultimately causing cytotoxic effects [ 25 , 39 , 42 ].…”

“…The AAPH free radical scavenging activities of the flavonoid (FML) samples were slightly modified according to the previously reported method [ 27 , 37 , 38 , 39 ]. The AAPH radical scavenging activity of FML was assessed by observing the inhibition of sheep erythrocyte hemolysis.…”

“…Pomelo fruitlets were rich in phenolics and flavonoids, which had the capacities of antioxidant activities and reducing the risk of inflammation, mutagenesis and carcinogenesis [ 38 ]. Many scholars had found that the TP, TF and antioxidant activities of SDF were great influenced by its raw materials [ 39 ].…”
