The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS‐CoV‐2) disease or COVID‐19 pandemic is associated with more than 230 million cases and has challenged healthcare systems globally. Many healthcare workers (HCWs) have acquired the infection, often through their workplace, with a significant number dying. The epidemiology of COVID‐19 infection in HCWs continues to be explored, with manifold exposure risks identified, leading to COVID‐19 being recognised as an occupational disease for HCWs. The physical illness due to COVID‐19 in HCWs is similar to the general population, with some HCWs experiencing a long‐term illness, which may impact their ability to return to work. HCWs have also been affected by the immense workplace and psychosocial disruption caused by the pandemic. The impacts on the psychological well‐being of HCWs globally have been profound, with high prevalence estimates for mental health symptoms, including emotional exhaustion. Globally, governments, healthcare organisations and employers have key responsibilities, including: to be better prepared for crises with comprehensive disaster response management plans, and to protect and preserve the health workforce from the physical and psychological impacts of the pandemic. While prioritising HCWs in vaccine rollouts globally has been critical, managing exposures and outbreaks occurring in healthcare settings remains challenging and continues to lead to substantial disruption to the health workforce. Safeguarding healthcare workforces during crises is critical as we move forward on the new path of ‘COVID normal’.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV 2) is the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019). It is an airborne virus and can spread through small droplets of saliva.Dental professionals work very close to the patient’s mouth, putting them at high risk of contracting SARS-CoV-2. This is because aerosols and splatter are generated when performing some dental procedures, which are known to be the possible potential sources of some other serious diseases to the dental team and patients in the dental settings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, dental professionals continued to provide dental services to patients; however, dental professionals are more likely to become contaminated due to the nature of their work. Hence a cautious emergency implementation of extra-protective measures is paramount to limit viral contamination between patients and the dental team. This research review was performed to summarize essential practical recommendations to be adopted by the dental team when providing dental services to the patient during the COVID-19 period, to minimize the risks of COVID-19.

O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a disponibilidade e o uso de Equipamentos de Proteção Individual (EPIs), por profissionais de saúde bucal do sistema público de saúde do Paraná, durante a primeira onda da pandemia de COVID-19. Estudo transversal, realizado entre agosto e outubro de 2020, com utilização de questionário online enviado aos cirurgiões-dentistas, auxiliares e técnicos em saúde bucal por e-mail e divulgação em redes sociais. A amostra foi composta por 575 participantes, sendo 519 da atenção primária e 56 da secundária. Os profissionais tiveram acesso e utilizaram os EPIs para a prática odontológica, com maior frequência para os rotineiros (gorro, máscara cirúrgica, óculos de proteção e luvas de procedimento), e menor, para os recém incorporados (máscara N95/PFF2S e avental impermeável). Concluiu-se que, observadas as limitações impostas pela pandemia, os EPIs pautados nas diretrizes de prevenção e controle da COVID-19 estiveram disponíveis nos serviços públicos odontológicos do Paraná.
