Protective Role of an Extract Waste Product from Citrus bergamia in an In Vitro Model of Neurodegeneration

Abstract: A balanced diet, rich in fruits and vegetables and ensuring the intake of natural products, has been shown to reduce or prevent the occurrence of many chronic diseases. However, the choice to consume large quantities of fruits and vegetables leads to an increase in the amount of waste, which can cause an alteration in environmental sustainability. To date, the concept of a “byproduct” has evolved, now being understood as a waste product from which it is still possible obtain useful compounds. Byproducts in the… Show more

“…In general, fiber has long been considered an important element in glycemic control and fat absorption due to its gastric emptying properties [ 47 , 48 , 49 ]. The chemical composition of O. ficus-indica includes fair amounts of fiber, capable of improving glucose absorption [ 50 , 51 ], regulating carbohydrate metabolism and digestion, preventing hypercholesterolemia, and modulating cholesterol activity [ 52 ]. For these reasons, cladodes are known to provide numerous beneficial properties for human health [ 53 ].…”

“…The test has been used to evaluate oxidative resistance in Caenorhabditis elegans ( C. elegans ) [ 112 , 113 ] or to evaluate locomotive assays in AD Drosophila melanogaster model [ 114 ]. Different oxidative resistance assays have been performed in vitro with human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells [ 115 , 116 , 117 , 118 ], or with cerebellar granule neurons [ 119 ]. The Tukey test has also been used to evaluate Tau protein aggregation inhibition assays [ 119 , 120 ].…”

“…Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is a citrus fruit in the Rutaceae family. Bergamot has been revealed over time to be a promising ally against various ailments, demonstrating antimicrobial, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, and neuroprotective properties [206][207][208][209][210][211][212]. The polyphenolic fraction of bergamot (BPF) is characterized by the presence of many polyphenol compounds, such as melitidin, brutieridin, neoeriocitrin, naringin, and neohesperidin [208].…”
