Protective Role of Golden Flaxseed (<i>Linum usitatissimum</i> L.) Against Oxidative Damage in Lipids and Proteins of Healthy Volunteers

Abstract: Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) is composed mainly of bioactive components such as polyphenols, polyunsaturated fatty acids, fiber and lignans. Flaxseed can be found in different presentation forms (grain or flour) and varieties (brown or golden); however, questions have arisen as to whether the presentation form and/or variety may influence the health effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects on blood pressure, anthropometric and oxidative parameters in healthy human volunteers. All s… Show more

“…In the micronucleus frequency and comet assay, all groups exhibited normal values, demonstrating that the components of flaxseed are not able to produce cytogenetic changes. These findings are consistent with previous studies (Pilar and others ; Zuravski and others ).…”

“…However, no significant differences were observed in CAT activity between the control and MS groups, which is in line with the findings of Bagul and others (), who also found no differences in this enzyme activity in animals fed a high‐fructose diet compared with those fed a standard diet. Furthermore, the increase in activities of these 3 enzymes in groups that received FO and SDG shows that both substances can positively affect enzymatic antioxidant defenses both in healthy and MS groups, which is consistent with findings from previous studies (Tayyebi‐Khosroshahi and others ; Pilar and others ; Zuravski and others ; Sawant and Bodhankar ). However, we observed a greater increase in groups treated with SDG, demonstrating the greater antioxidant power of this component.…”

“…The lymphocyte cultures were prepared using 0.5 ml of venous blood (collected by voluntary venipuncture) and immediately transferred to a culture medium containing 10 ml of RPMI 1640 supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) and 1% streptomycin-penicillin, as described in previous work by our group [ 5 , 8 , 9 ] and approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Pampa (n°. 27045614.0.0000.5323).…”

“…The translation of the Latin origin of the name, meaning “very useful”, is suggestive, considering the various products with biological effects that contain flaxseed and its fractions: flaxseed oil, whole seed, flaxseed meal, flaxseed mucilage and/or alcohol extracts, flaxseed hulls, ground whole seed, and flaxseed oleosomes [2]. Two major varieties of flaxseed products are available, but with different biological activity [1, 3]. Flaxseed contains one-third soluble and two-thirds insoluble fibres from a total of 35–45% of fibres.…”
