Protective role of tea catechins against oxidation‐induced damage of type 2 diabetic erythrocytes

Abstract: 1. Oxidative stress is recognized as a major contributing factor for the development of late complications of diabetes. 2. Tea contains polyphenolic compounds (catechins), which have many important biological properties, including strong anti-oxidant activity. 3. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of tea catechins (epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG) and epicatechin (EC)) on markers of oxidative stress (malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathio… Show more

“…In addition to α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities, these phytoconstituents are also reported to have several other biological activities including anti-bacterial, antioxidative, anti-cancer etc. 9 . This supportive evidence further increases the medicinal importance of this Raphanus sativus indicating that this herb is not only beneficial for diabetes but also may be useful to a number of other human health complications.…”

“…8 Polyphenolic compounds, abundant in these nutritional sources, could play a major role in enhancing the antioxidant system. 9,10 Resveratrol, (trans-3,5,4′-trihydroxystilbene) is a polyphenolic phytoalexin present naturally in grapes, peanuts and red-wine. It has been reported to possess diverse biochemical and physiological actions, including estrogenic, antiplatelet, and anti-inflammatory properties.…”
