Protein-Based Biostimulants to Enhance Plant Growth—State-of-the-Art and Future Direction with Sugar Beet as an Example

Abstract: Protein-based biostimulants (PBBs) are derived from the hydrolysis of protein-rich raw materials of plant and/or animal origins, usually by-products or wastes from agro-industries. The active ingredients (AIs) produced by hydrolysis have the capacity to influence physiological and metabolic processes in plants, leading to enhanced growth, nutrient and water-use efficiency, tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses, and improved crop yield and quality. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art and future opportuni… Show more

“…Protein materials are widely used in the field of biomedicine [ 110 ]. Figure 5 D shows some existing applications of protein superabsorbent materials and their prospects for future applications [ 97 ]. Collagen, gelatine, and oleoresin are commonly used to produce polymeric superabsorbent materials.…”

“…Biostimulants are used in specialty crops, which sometimes produce tremendous income per acre, unlike row crops (Jolayemi et al, 2022). Specialty crops are known to be sensitive to environmental stresses (Aloisi et al, 2022).…”

“…A recent alternative that has been tested to enhance plant growth is the use of protein-based biostimulants (Jolayemi et al, 2022). Among them, Jiménez-Rosado et al improved zinc fertilization using soy-controlled-release protein-based matrices (Jiménez-Rosado et al, 2021).…”
