Protein-losing gastropathy associated with cytomegalovirus infection in a child

Abstract: Protein-losing gastropathy is a rare entity. Unlike the disease in adults, it usually is benign and self-limited in children. The aetiological contribution of cytomegalovirus has been insufficiently documented and the immunological status of patients was rarely described in most reports. The authors report an 11-year-old boy with generalised oedema and hypoproteinemia. Upper endoscopy with biopsies showed marked hypertrophy of gastric folds and foveolar hyperplasia involving the body and fundus. The presence o… Show more

“…Hyperkalemia, attributable to renal failure, is commonly observed in fatal cases (128,129). Hypoalbuminemia develops early in the course of illness in most cases of EVD as a result of either urinary protein loss, extravasation into tissues, or possibly protein-losing gastroenteropathy, as documented in other acute viral infections (129,132,133). Hypocalcemia may occur in up to 75% of EVD cases, consistent with rates observed in patients who are critically ill with other diseases, where it is thought to be related to impaired parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion, reduced calcitriol production, or end-organ resistance to PTH (129,134).…”

“…1 In addition, Garthwaite et al (2020) found that the rosters of Power Five basketball and football teams (the teams most likely to be net producers of revenue) were disproportionately Black (like Prothro), while other sports that benefited financially from basketball and football surpluses were disproportionately White. This state of affairs has been criticized as unethical (Southall & Karcher, 2016), and it has prompted many advocates to call for more compensation for college athletes, and with some recent success (Booker, 2020;McCann, 2019;Russo, 2019).…”
