Protein profiling of angiogenesis-related growth factors in laryngeal carcinoma: Pattern of protein expression in relation to tumour progression

Abstract: Abstract. The expression of angiogenesis-related proteins was determined in laryngeal tumour tissue, associated tumour involved lymph nodes, apparently normal mucosa and control tissue and were related to tumour stage. Both laryngeal tumour tissue and associated metastatic nodes were obtained from seven patients undergoing surgical resection; in four cases apparently normal mucosa was also dissected from the tumour specimen margins. Control uvula mucosa was obtained from five healthy volunteers undergoing uvul… Show more

“…Patients with tonsillar SCC showed higher MMP8 levels compared to patients with benign tonsillar disease [66]. MMP8 protein did not have a prognostic value in larynx tumors [43] where its levels varied greatly between patients, nor in supraglottic laryngeal tumors [45] where it was detected in only a few cells. Likewise, no difference in MMP8 protein levels were found between salivary gland carcinomas and normal tissue [46].…”

“…The Proteome Profiler TM Human Angiogenesis Array Kit, (R&D Systems, USA, Catalog Number: ARRY 007) [ 18 ] was employed to screen for the presence of 55 soluble angiogenesis-related factors ( Table 1 ) in the patients’ ascitic fluid according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Briefly, 1ml of the supernatant from ascitic fluid is incubated with 500 μl of a relevant buffer and 15 μl of a mixture of biotinylated antibodies (specific for each of the 55 factors) for 1 hour.…”
