Proteomics: An Indispensable Tool for Novel Biomarker Identification in Melanoma

Abstract: Melanoma is a prevalent disease with a high mortality rate. The advent of proteomics has enabled the identification of various prognostic and diagnostic melanoma biomarkers, fulfilling a vital need. The development of various protein fractionation and analysis tools has advanced the role of proteomics in analyzing complex protein samples obtained from melanoma patients. Proteomics is also being utilized to help guide drug design and the development of treatment algorithms. Ultimately, proteomics-based methodol… Show more

“…In order to explore this rich information source, system biology provides frameworks tailored to each commonly known -omics data type. Melanoma-specific -omics data can be obtained from genomic [15,16] and proteomic studies [17] but also from the secretome [18] and the metabolome, respectively [19,20]. Because multiple -omics data are rarely integrated with a systems-centered approach [21], the following studies and repositories are only a starting point.…”

“…Crabb et al performed global quantitative proteomic analysis of UM to increase our understanding of UM metastasis processes and to identify biomarkers of UM metastasis 169 . MS-based proteomics using the untargeted MS method to discover novel protein biomarker candidates and the targeted MS mode to identify peptides of interest, has been a useful tool in melanoma research 170 .…”
