Proteomics of an Orphan Legume, Grasspea: Current Status and Future Strategy

Abstract: Orphan legumes are defined as those which are grown as food, animal feed and/or other legumes of agriculture importance, but which have received very little research attention. Grasspea is one of the best examples of such legume which is cultivated worldwide, as it is the cheapest source of dietary protein particularly for the developing world. It has remained outside the realm of largescale functional genomics studies. Many grasspea cultivars are capable to withstand a myriad of constraints, not only the comm… Show more

“…This is one of the most effective tools, widely utilized for analyzing genes that are nutrient-responsive and associated with adaptation. Transcriptome study between mungbean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) susceptible and resistant variety revealed key genes such as JAZ and LOX genes, phytoene synthase, and cytochrome P450 that contributed to the resistance against the virus ( 121 ). Based on the transcriptome study of two distinct horse gram genotypes for drought tolerance several transcription factors (TFs) families such as WRKY, NAC and MYB were reported to be involved in conferring drought stress tolerance ( 122 ).…”

“…Finally, the transcriptome represents the expressed portion of the genome while the proteome is a reflection of that subset of the transcriptome that is translated into proteins. Proteomics in orphan legumes is still rare, with grass pea being one of the few with such studies (Rathi et al, 2015).…”
