Protocol for a systematic review of the diagnostic and prognostic utility of tests currently available for the detection of aspirin resistance in patients with established cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease

Abstract: BackgroundThe benefits of aspirin as an anti-platelet agent are well established; however, there has been much debate about the lack of uniformity in the efficacy of aspirin to inhibit platelet function. In some patients, aspirin fails to inhibit platelets even where compliance has been verified, a phenomenon which has been termed “aspirin resistance”. These patients may in turn be at a higher risk of future vascular events. The proportion of “resistant” patients identified depends on the type of platelet func… Show more

“…The search for systematic reviews [ 9 ] was performed in April 2012 and updated in May 2014 (see Additional file 1 for sample search strategy). Systematic reviews were eligible for inclusion if their primary aim was to examine or quantify the potential association between ‘aspirin resistance’ (a candidate prognostic factor, which is defined by a PFT) and risk of future cardiovascular events in patients who were prescribed aspirin therapy.…”

“…A ‘systematic review of systematic reviews’ was undertaken as part of a wider project, which comprised a new systematic review on the same topic and an economic evaluation [ 8 , 9 ]. Both the new systematic review and the previous systematic reviews are used as illustrative examples throughout.…”
