Abstract:Stress-associated gastrointestinal mucosal lesions may complicate critical illness. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are the well-established therapeutic standard for acid-related mucosal injury. The role of PPI in preventing stress-associated mucosal damage is not completely clear yet. Although PPI are well tolerated, side effects such as increased infection risk, kidney injury, drug interactions, electrolyte disturbances or changes in microbiome composition have to be considered.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
