Provider Preference in Exam Room Layout Design and Computing

Abstract: Background The introduction of the electronic health record (EHR) has had a significant impact on provider–patient interactions, particularly revolving around patient-centeredness. More research is needed to understand the provider perspective of this interaction. Objectives Our objective was to obtain provider feedback on a new exam room design compared with the one already in use with respect to the computing layout, which included a wall-mounted monitor for ease of (re)-positioning. An additional … Show more

“…While there are other ways to organize these types of qualitative results, we find that frequency of occurrence is an effective way to organize the findings for stakeholders and have used this method in previous studies. [22][23][24] Summaries of findings for each question were then reviewed by a second team member (J. H.) for accuracy (frequency of occurrence). In addition, the second analyst reviewed the organization of findings and in some cases extracted relevant subfindings of importance within each overarching finding.…”

“…Mr. Read works closely with Dr. Saleem on numerous healthcare human factors projects, including ones related to exam room computing. Mr. Read has published recent research in this area, including results from an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) funded study on provider preference in exam room layout design and computing (Read, Weiler, Satterly, Soares, & Saleem, 2019).…”

“…For this panel, Mr. Read will discuss his most recent research involving strategies for using the EHR as a mediator of provider-patient interaction in the exam room. The computing set-up for the EHR can either hinder or facilitate provider-patient interaction (Read et al, 2019;Weiler et al, 2018). Mr. Read's research, in collaboration with Dr. Saleem, proposes to investigate various computing arrangements to simplify screen sharing and using the EHR as a communication facilitator between the provider and patient.…”
