Providing VoD Services Based on Unstructured Overlay

Abstract: It is still a challenging task to provide large scale video-on-demand (VoD) streaming services based on overlay network due to its inherent dynamicity and heterogeneity. Most of previous work has focused on how to construct a structured overlay to tackle this issue, i.e., tree-based overlay and DHT. However, they always suffer from inefficient resource utilization and poor reliability. In this paper, we propose a new solution based on unstructured overlay, called GridCast, in which a directional gossip protoco… Show more

“…In GridCast [16][17][18][19], video files are segmented on time rather than space, although, in some traditional file downloading systems such as Bit-Torrent, files are segmented on space. Systems like Bit-Torrent do not provide any coherent way for users to interact with files during downloading.…”

“…In order to provide high quality video, piece scheduling, peer selection, failure recovery and a robust streaming architecture are crucial to the system. Many researches such as BiToS [11], P2Cast [12], P2VOD [13], PcVOD [14], PONDER [15], GridCast [16] [17], PROP [22], and [23] have proposed to improve the video quality under different assumptions. We expect the video quality can be increased by the assistance of stable proxy.…”
