Provision of pharmaceutical care by community pharmacists across Europe: Is it developing and spreading?

Abstract: The present study demonstrated a slight evolution in self-reported provision of pharmaceutical care by community pharmacists across Europe, as measured by the BPCS. The slow progress suggests a range of barriers, which are preventing pharmacists moving beyond traditional roles. Support from professional bodies and more patient-centred community pharmacy contracts, including remuneration for pharmaceutical care services, are likely to be required if quicker progress is to be made in the future.

“…Unfortunately, according to the participants the only services the pharmacist provides are just dispensing medication and the vast majority didn't know what the pharmacist roles are. All of the participants agreed that there are insufficient pharmaceutical services provided, with little or even sometimes no respect for those patients, which is actually contrasts the ultimate goal of the application of pharmaceutical care 29 . It is difficult for patients' to accept their illness and adhere to therapy if they do not get proper care from their healthcare professionals.…”

At the global level, private consultation areas are already present to a large extent in community pharmacies (Costa et al, ; C. Hughes et al, ), while space are not considered important to communication issues between pharmacists and patients in Korea. However, many respondents replied that pharmacies did not provide comfortable spaces for communication.…”

“…Many studies have noted the roles of pharmacies and pharmacists from the perspectives of healthcare providers (Cooper & Tsoneva, ; Fang, Yang, Feng, Ni, & Zhang, ; Hughes, Breault, Hicks, & Schindel, ; Schindel et al, ), and there have been few studies conducted from the perspectives of the public. However, the public's perception of the roles and functions of pharmacies are essential in this era of expanding patient‐centred pharmaceutical practices (Costa et al, ; Hughes et al, ). This study has strengths in presenting the current views of community pharmacies held by the public, but it did not explain it deeply.…”
