Proximal Aortic Dissection (Dissecting Aortic Aneurysm) in a Mature Ostrich

Abstract: The gross and histopathologic lesions observed in a case of spontaneous proximal aortic dissection (dissecting aortic aneurysm) in a mature ostrich are reported. At necropsy, a dissecting intramural hematoma was seen in the proximal aorta, extended about 12 cm distally from the aortic valves. Histopathologic changes in aortic dissection included fragmentation and disruption of elastic laminae, presence of cystic extracellular spaces, and pooling of ground substance in the tunica media. Hepatic copper levels we… Show more

“…However, copper deficiency that predisposes to defective elastin is suggested as a possible cause [54–57] which is also described in turkeys [58]. Other causes might be systemic hypertension and a genetic predisposition [55]. The other vascular lesions identified in this study (case Nos.…”

“…Sudden death due to a dissecting aortic aneurysm in ostriches and in a single emu has been suggested as being related to copper deficiency (Ferreras et al, 2001;Vanhooser et al, 1994). Histologic aortic lesions include fragmentation and disruption of the elastic laminae, cystic extracellular spaces, and an accumulation of what have been interpreted to be strongly sulfated acid mucopolysaccharides based on staining with Alcian blue and periodic acid Schiff (PAS).…”
