Proximity, Knowledge and Innovation in Peripheral Regions. On the Intersection between Geographical and Organizational Proximity

Abstract: What role do various kinds of proximity play in the current and projected development of peripheral areas? In summarizing and drawing conclusions from this special issue on proximity, this paper elaborates on two core notions of proximity, geographical and organizational. It presents a framework in which the relationship between geographical and organizational proximity is conceptualized in a way that is somewhat different from previous contributions, notably by the French School on Proximity. “…As well, global or virtual communities of practice have become theoretical tools for knowledge management (Wenger et al, 2002). This is without doubt an essential research avenue in order to place the relational approach in line with the current forms of globalization whereby rich, long-distance relations are no longer occasional or short-lived but can also be better maintained, richer and more crucial (Lagendijk & Lorentzen, 2007).…”

“…In principle, firms in such peripheral regions can compensate for a lack of local knowledge spillovers by collaborations with non--local actors. Such collaborations establish an organizational framework through which interactive learning also with distanciated partners is facilitated (Lagendijk and Lorentzen 2007;Tödtling et al 2006;Trippl et al 2009). This paper aims to investigate whether collaborations with non--local actors can compensate for a lack of local knowledge spillovers.…”

“…For investigation purposes, 290 Swedish municipalities are merged into 90 local labor markets (LLMs) that are defined by statistics of commuting in the way that maximizes self-containment of commuting flows within a region (Statistics Sweden 2010). Non-core regions are defined as those beyond the metropolitan areas and their surroundings (Lagendijk and Lorentzen 2007;Malul and Bar-El 2009). In case of Sweden, the LLMs of three largest cities-Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö-are considered as metropolitan regions, while the remaining 87 LLMs are classified as non-core regions.…”
