We investigate spin and optical properties of individual nitrogen-vacancy centers located within 1-10 nm from the diamond surface. We observe stable defects with a characteristic optically detected magnetic resonance spectrum down to lowest depth. We also find a small, but systematic spectral broadening for defects shallower than about 2 nm. This broadening is consistent with the presence of a surface paramagnetic impurity layer [Tisler et al., ACS Nano 3, 1959] largely decoupled by motional averaging. The observation of stable and well-behaved defects very close to the surface is critical for single-spin sensors and devices requiring nanometer proximity to the target.

“The heavens proclaim the glory of God”: Nature, Scripture and the suppliant in Psalm 19
This article investigates the relationship between the different parts of Psalm 19, viz. v 2-7, 8-11 and 12-15. After a translation and colometric analysis, observations are made on the structure of the poem, the wordplay, and the other literary strategies that keep the different parts together, and on the characteristics that mark this composition as a wisdom psalm. Psalm 82 has long resisted a consensus regarding its genre. While some scholars have noted that the psalm's language overlaps with that of the complaint genre, several features of the psalm appear to complicate that reading. As a result, the framework of the divine council is frequently given interpretive priority, which has resulted in a variety of solutions to the psalm's several interpretive difficulties and has also contributed to a general reluctance to consider the psalm within the literary context of the psalms of Asaph. I argue that the psalm's interpretive difficulties are best resolved by understanding the psalm as a complaint, specifically a complaint put into the mouth of YHWH and addressed to the gods of the nations-a "gods-complaint. " This reading provides a new interpretive framework that may help resolve important questions related to the psalm's compositional background, rhetorical function, and theological influence.
