The Chamorro healers of Guam have more than a thousand years of history of using herbs and medicinal plants for the treatment of common ailments. The objective of this study is to review the bioactive compounds and pharmacological properties of medicinal plants which are used for urinary tract health by local healers. Literature searches were performed using Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and SpringerLink, by using several keywords, including “medicinal plants in Guam”, “traditional uses”, “bioactive compounds”, “pharmacological properties”, and “urinary tract infections”. This review highlights the traditional uses, bioactive compounds, and pharmacological properties of five medicinal plant species, namely Euphorbia hirta, Phyllanthus amarus, Premna serratifolia, Psidium guajava, and Urena lobata. Phenolics, alkaloids, terpenoids, essential oils, and polypeptides are the leading secondary metabolites reported in different plant extracts, which have been found to have significant antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and anticancer properties. The therapeutic claims made about medicinal plants in Guam are well supported by the literature, having similar applications and pharmacological properties in other regions of the world. These medicinal plants have a lot of unexplored potential that might be utilized to develop more potent drugs for the treatment of infectious diseases, as well as food and herbal supplements.

Psidium guajavaL. (Myrtaceae), conhecida como goiabeira, é uma importante espécie vegetal com diversos valores medicinais. Na medicina tradicional, é utilizada para o tratamento de uma série de doenças, como distúrbios gastrointestinais, processos inflamatórios, no tratamento de cáries, em afecções dermatomucosas, como analgésico, em distúrbios respiratórios, dentre outros. As ações podem ser atribuídas à infinidade de compostos bioativos presentes em P. guajava. O objetivo desta revisão é fornecer informações atualizadas sobre os usos etnomedicinais, compostos bioativos, potenciais ações anti-inflamatória e antinociceptiva, além da toxicidade das folhas de P. guajava L. A estratégia de busca utilizada continha o nome científico, sinonímias e nomes populares da espécie vegetal. As bases de dados consultadas foram Cochrane, Medline, SCOPUS, Science Direct, Web of Science, Lilacs, SciELO, Google acadêmico e Google books.; além de monografias em compêndios oficiais. Dentre os principais fitoquímicos extraídos de folhas de P. guajava, podem ser citados compostos dos grupos dos flavonoides, taninos, terpenoides, saponinas e óleos essenciais. Estudos in vitro e in vivo sugerem que derivados das folhas da espécie vegetal possuem potencial anti-inflamatório e antinociceptivo. Assim, considerando seu perfil fitoquímico e seus efeitos benéficos, derivados das folhas da espécie podem, potencialmente, serem utilizados no desenvolvimento de produtos farmacêuticos. Contudo, lacunas consideráveis ainda precisam ser preenchidas, como por exemplo, aquelas relacionadas a padronização do método extrativo e no que diz respeito a relação droga:derivado obtida. Ademais, há necessidade de ensaios clínicos mais robustos para estabelecer as doses seguras e a eficácia de P. guajava como agente anti-inflamatório.

The increase in the use of plastic-based materials has resulted in the generation of large volumes of plastic wastes that are non-biodegradable, and this is of public health concern. Hence, there is a need to adopt an eco-friendly technology that is capable of producing plastics that are biodegradable, and less hazardous to man and the environment. The study focuses on the conversion of biopolymer to bioplastic rodent bait and its toxicological effects. The toxicological effect of the product was tested on forty-five male Wistar rats randomly distributed into 9 groups after acclimatization period of two weeks. The groups include: Group 1 (Bioplastic alone); Group 2 (Bait meal + 1.5 g zinc phosphide); Group 3 (Bait meal + 3 g zinc phosphide), and Group 4 (Bait meal + 6 g zinc phosphide). Rats were fed ad libitum for 5 days in which their body weights, morphological changes, and time of death were recorded daily. After exposure experimental to diets, histopathological, biochemical, and haematological parameters were determined. Morphological observations such as reduced activities, fur loss in toxicant fed rats in comparison to the control were observed. The results showed that serum Aspartate Transaminase (AST) and Alanine Transferase (ALT) activities were highest in test groups compared to the control. The histopathological analysis revealed high levels of inflammatory cells, necrosis and haemorrhage within the test groups when compared with the control. Bioplastics produced from cassava residues as rodent bait were highly effective. These bioplastics can be used for the control of household rodents. Therefore, this technology can be adopted for domestic eradication of rodents.
