Psoas muscle metastasis from cervical carcinoma: Correlation and comparison of diagnostic features on FDG-PET/CT and diffusion-weighted MRI

Abstract: Psoas muscle metastasis, though rare, is the commonest site of skeletal muscle involvement in cervical carcinoma. The appropriate clinical management of this condition, particularly of the pain related to malignant psoas syndrome, is still evolving and the diagnostic features on conventional morphological imaging modalities are often non specific, with the differential diagnosis lying between sarcoma, hematoma, and abscess. In this report, a comparison of various morphofunctional imaging modalities was made. F… Show more

“…Kim et al [ 7 ] detected secondary PA in 61% of a series of 105 patients and the most frequent cause as spondylodiscitis. In the literature, many cases are reported as cervix cancer metastasis to psoas muscle [ 9 , 10 ]. Our case is rare due to presentation of cervix cancer metastasis with psoas abscess and development of PA secondary to colon and ureter metastasis of cervix cancer.…”

“…However, sometimes differentiation is very difficult (5). In fact, clinical presentation, association of advanced imaging techniques including ultrasound, computed tomography particularly magnetic resonance imaging and PET/CT scan with higher sensitivity and higher specificity can be useful (6). Most patients with advanced cervical cancer may have widespread metastatic lesions.…”

“…Although the abscess showed a decrease in size it never resolved fully which was attributed to the malignant origin of the disease. From the other cases it is evident that only a correct histological classification of the abscess could lead to an appropriate treatment of the primary cause which is concurrent chemoradiotherapy [ 12 , 19 , 20 ].…”
