Psoriasis and osteoporosis: a literature review

Abstract: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with complex comorbidities. Recent evidence has revealed how the inflammatory nature of psoriasis affects bone mineral density and may lead to osteoporosis. This review outlines the current understanding and advances on the association between psoriasis and osteoporosis. The current literature suggests an increased risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis in patients with extensive and chronic psoriasis, compounded by other lifestyle and genetic factors. It suggests … Show more

“…By analyzing the Korean National Health Insurance Service – Health Screening Cohort, Choi et al reported that psoriasis increased the risk of osteoporosis (OR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.16–1.27) 35 . Patients with extensive and chronic psoriasis are known to have increased risks of osteopenia and osteoporosis 36 . Studies indicate that SD is also a predictor of metabolic syndrome, 37 which is characterized by a cluster of disorders, including abdominal obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and insulin resistance.…”

“… 35 Patients with extensive and chronic psoriasis are known to have increased risks of osteopenia and osteoporosis. 36 Studies indicate that SD is also a predictor of metabolic syndrome, 37 which is characterized by a cluster of disorders, including abdominal obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and insulin resistance. Since insulin resistance and bone metabolism share a similar pathophysiology, abnormal signaling of insulin could cause dysregulation of osteoblast activity and osteoclast differentiation, leading to bone damage and osteoporosis.…”

“…The severity of psoriasis determines the risk of COPD [166] Osteoporosis TNF-α and IL-6 increase the production of Receptor Activator of NF-KB Ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin, which stimulate osteoclastogenesis [167] NAFLD TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-17 may contribute to psoriatic plaque development, impaired glucose metabolism and IR in hepatocytes and adipocytes [168] Consistent with its autoimmune nature, psoriasis has been linked to other autoimmune skin disorders. Several intriguing links to vitiligo, Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), and Bullous Pemphigoid (BP) have been observed.…”
