“…These findings are in line with previous reports [14,44] in which individuals that were regularly exposed to carbamates and endosulfan reported reproductive and erectile dysfunction. In addition, Burnett [45] in his review reports increased erectile dysfunction and loss of libido in men exposed to a variety pesticides [46,47].…”

“…Among the pesticide formulators, exposed to pesticide for 40 hours per week, a positive association was found between exposure time (5 versus 20 years of exposure) and erectile dysfunction. In addition, both pesticide formulators and applicators showed significantly higher rates of psychiatric disorders than controls [47]. Various groups of pesticides (organophosphates, carbamates, pyrethroids) are known to produce toxic effects by affecting normal nerve conduction in the central and peripheral nervous systems [11].…”

“…OPs being inhibitors of esterases lead to the accumulation of acetylcholine at nerve endings leading to cholinergic crises, by initial stimulation and eventually exhaustion of cholinergic synapses (Singh and Sharma, 2000). Clinical features reported anxiety depression, irritability, psychotic symptoms, and erectile disorders were more significant in pesticides applicators than controls (Amr et al, 1997). Chronic low-dose exposure leads to the neuropsychiatric consequences among the tobacco agricultural workers in Brazil (Salvi et al, 2003).…”

“…Behavioural impairments due to pesticide exposure have also been implicated in serious accidents among agricultural workers (Redhead, 1968;Wood et al, 1971;Smith et al, 1968). Amr et al (1997) found that, compared to controls, subjects heavily exposed to pesticides (40 h/week, 9 months/year) had a significant increase in the frequency of psychiatric disorders, especially depressive neurosis and dysthymic disorder (DSM-III-R). These results left unresolved issue of reversibility of psychiatric symptoms after a pesticide-free period and the occurrence of syndrome in subjects not so heavily exposed to OP compounds.…”
