Psychological and Social Effects of One Year Robot Assisted Activity on Elderly People at a Health Service Facility for the Aged

Abstract: A long-term experiment of robot assisted activity for elderly people has been conducted at a health service facility for the aged since Aug. 2003. Three therapeutic seal robots, Paro, were introduced there. This paper describes the results of the experiment for one year. Face scales that consist of illustrations of person's faces were used to evaluate person's moods. In addition, Geriatric Depression Scales were used to measure person's depression by questionnaires. As the results, feelings of the elderly peop… Show more

“…These robots are not designed to provide a specific therapy but to be a focus of attention. Paro, a synthetic actuated stuffed seal toy, behaves in response to touch and sound (Wada, Shibata, Saito, Sakamoto, & Tanie, 2005). Its goal is to provide the benefits of pet-assisted therapy, which can affect resident quality of life in nursing homes that cannot support pets (Edwards & Beck, 2002).…”

“…When robotics researchers introduced Paro in the common areas of a nursing home (Wada et al, 2005), residents were also in the common areas longer and socialized more. Stress proteins also decreased in their urine.…”

“…Another such example is NurseBot, a robot used to guide users around a nursing home [85]. Paro [134,135], an actuated stuffed seal, behaves in response to touch and sound. Its goal is to provide the benefits of pet-assisted therapy, which can affect resident quality of life [30], in nursing homes that cannot support pets.…”

“…When roboticists introduced the robot seal Paro into the common areas of a nursing home [134,135], they found a reduction of stress proteins in the urine of the participants. Another positive effect of the experiment was that residents were in the common areas longer and socialized more.…”
