The paper presents a comparative study of religious identity in countries that share similar sociopolitical circumstances, namely socialism/communism and postsocialism. The analysis is based on field research, and the chosen subject of study is the ethnic group of Banatian Bulgarians, whose members live on the territory of Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria. The paper suggests that different regulatory practices by governments have had different effects on religious identity, and that other social factors, such as the size of the communities and language use, are also significant. Religion in the socialist/communist period was most strictly regulated in Bulgaria, where religious tradition was disrupted, while in Serbia the traditional component of religious identity was preserved in the private sphere, and in Romania secularization was present in some social strata. In postsocialism religion has been revitalized, and data suggest that a high level of religiousness is related to the ability to use one’s first language in church, which, in our study, is the case in Romania.

This paper makes a case for an integrative approach to the field of psychology of religion and spirituality. Rather than relying upon or choosing one approach or theory to the detriment of all others, one can identify the construction of psychological identity, modelized as a constellation, as one of several possible « points of connection » serving as work site for the convergence, synthesis and exchange among the vast and rich variety of concepts, measures, theories and methods extant in the field. This work of integration can stimulate, and enrich our perceptions of the multiple dimensions, levels and valences of religion and spirituality.

RésuméCet article présente les premiers résultats d’une étude exploratoire sur la spiritualitéet le bien-être chez les personnes âgées résidant dans un établissement médico- social de Suisse romande. De nombreuses difficultés liées à l’adaptation à un nouveau cadre de vie, à la perte d’autonomie et de liberté, à l’isolement et à la solitude ont été rapportées par les sujets interrogés. Si pour certains résidents la religion ne présente pas d’intérêt, pour beaucoup d’autres la foi religieuse représente une importante source de réconfort et de force pour faire face aux problèmes de santé et aux autres adversités de la vie. Les mécanismes psychologiques du lien potentiel entre d’une part bien-être et santé et d’autre part spiritualité et foi religieuse sont discutés à l’aide d’une modélisation des systèmes religieux. AbstractThis article presents the first results of an exploratory study on spirituality and well-being among the elderly residing in care institution in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Various kinds of difficulties and troubles in adapting to the institutional life like the loss of autonomy and sense of freedom, social isolation and loneliness were reported by subjects. If for some residents religion and spirituality do not matter, many others claimed that religious faith is an important source of comfort and strength while coping with health problems and other adversities of life. The psychological mechanisms of a potential link between on one side well- being and health, and on the other side spirituality and religious faith are discussed through a model of religious systems.
