Psychological Collectivism as a Moderator of the Impact of Supervisor–Subordinate Personality Similarity on Employees’ Service Quality

“…Critical incidents were also solicited from the managers by three researchers, with education and training in industrial-organizational psychology. The interviews resulted in a summary of 16 behavioral statements agreed by the three researchers to reflect on contextual performance (for details of the item constructions, refer to Hui et al, 2003, 2007). As customer-service quality can be represented by how frequently these behaviors are displayed, we reformatted each item so that the frequency of the behaviors could be rated on a 1–5 Likert scale (1 = never , 3 = occasionally , 5 = very often ).…”

“…Hui, Cheng, and Gan (, p. 188) cautioned against “sweeping statements such as ‘collectivists are helpful people'”. Instead, it appears that the helping behavior of collectivists is strongly influenced by group/organisation norms as well as whether the individual needing help is in the in‐group or the out‐group (Fay & Sonnetag, 2010; Guan, Deng, Risavy, Bond, & Li, ; Templer, ).…”

“…Because work is communal (as opposed to “my vs. your work”), the effect of personality on helping may be muted. However, research evidence points to the existence of between‐person differences in helping behaviors even in a single organisation in collectivist cultures (Hui et al., ; Guan et al., ; Templer, ). This suggests that there might be a role for personality.…”
