Psychological Consequences of Longevity

Abstract: How do changes in life expectancy and longevity affect life-span development? This paper argues that historical increases in life expectancy primarily have an impact on the later and less on the earlier parts of the life span. Increased life expectancy is both a challenge and an opportunity for positive development. A perspective is outlined according to which self-regulation is a key factor for successful aging. Assuming a compensatory relationship of social norms/expectations and self-regulation for developm… Show more

“…We reported earlier that physical activity goals correlate with a higher level of physical activity in old age even after adjustment for differences in health (Saajanaho et al 2014b). Previously, it has been emphasized that goal disengagement may help people adjust to age-related changes (Freund et al 2009) and so benefit psychological well-being in old age (Boerner 2004;Heyl et al 2007). The present cross-sectional results warrant future study on whether maintaining goals for physical and leisure-time activities, regardless of diminished health resources, might lead to better outcomes in terms of physical functioning.…”

“…In a study of the implications of increasing longevity for society and for individuals, Freund, Nikitin, and Ritter (2009) found that as adults age, they are progressively less constrained by social norms and more dependent on self-regulating mechanisms in many domains of their lives, including education. With respect to activities later in life, Freund et al suggest that prior development and subsequent maintenance of self-regulatory competencies, such as setting and pursuing personal goals, are preconditions for what they describe as successful or positive aging.…”
