Psychological problems associated with diagnosis and treatment of lymphomas. II: Prospective study.

Abstract: A prospective study of 120 patients newly diagnosed as having Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was conducted to determine the nature, extent, and timing of the psychiatric and social morbidity associated with the diagnosis and treatment. Patients were interviewed at diagnosis and two, six, and 12 months later by trained interviewers using standardised questionnaires. Psychiatric morbidity was greatest in the three months before treatment, but new episodes of anxiety and depression developed through… Show more

“…In a prospective study of newly diagnosed lymphoma patients, performance on objective memory testing was not significantly different from general population norms, and was unchanging over time in spite of the fact that 38% of the patients complained of at least transient memory impairment, which was persistent for half of them throughout the period of the study (Devlen et al, 1987).…”

“…In a study of patients with epilepsy, those who complained of memory problems were significantly more depressed and anxious than non-complainers (Corcoran and Thompson, 1993). In the study by Devlen et al (1987), lymphoma patients who were anxious or depressed were also more likely to report memory impairment, although this was not reflected in objective test scores.…”

“…Fatigue has been reported to occur commonly in survivors of Hodgkin's disease. Devlen et al (1987) reported loss of energy in 42% and tiredness in 32% of 120 patients with Hodgkin's disease and non- Hodgkin's lymphoma 1 year after the diagnosis, despite the fact that the majority of patients had finished treatment and were in remission. A cross-sectional survey of long-term survivors of Hodgkin's disease a median of 9 years after treatment indicated that energy levels had not returned to patients' satisfaction in 37% (Fobair et al, 1986).…”

“…An increased incidence of anxiety and depression has been described after treatment of various cancers (Fobair et al, 1986;Devlen et al, 1987;Ahles et al, 1996;Aass et al, 1997) using various different standardized questionnaires. In addition, sexual dysfunction is a relatively frequent problem in patients following treatment for malignancy (Fobair et al, 1986;Bloom et al, 1993;Hjermstad and Kaasa, 1995), although the incidence varies according to the type of malignancy and treatment received.…”

“…Analysis of works devoted to adjustment disorders in patients with BD is complicated by the fact that some of them have been performed on small samples and even individual casuistic observations, and some of them were based solely on psychometric techniques. According to different authors [1,61,64] , the prevalence of adjustment disorders in this group of patients varies about 22,6-53,3%. According to J.Prieto et al (2002) [1] , adjustment disorders in patients with BD were detected in 22.7% of patients.…”
