Psychological stress in inflammatory bowel disease: Psychoneuroimmunological insights into bidirectional gut–brain communications

Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), mainly including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD), is an autoimmune gastrointestinal disease characterized by chronic inflammation and frequent recurrence. Accumulating evidence has confirmed that chronic psychological stress is considered to trigger IBD deterioration and relapse. Moreover, studies have demonstrated that patients with IBD have a higher risk of developing symptoms of anxiety and depression than healthy individuals. However, the underlying mechan… Show more

“…Psychological (e.g., fear, anxiety, and anger) and physiological stress (e.g., hunger, overeating, and restraint) can cause FGIDs ( Labanski et al, 2020 ; Chuang et al, 2021 ; Ge et al, 2022 ). Many studies have shown that stress delays gastric emptying, inhibits feeding, induces gastric hypersensitivity, and suppresses antral motility in animals ( Bulbul et al, 2019 ; Li et al, 2019 ; Jiang and Travagli, 2020 ).…”

“…Este eje es una vía involucrada en la adaptación al estrés psicológico crónico. La estimulación crónica de este eje provoca aumento de la secreción de hormona liberadora de corticotropina, que estimula la secreción de hormona adrenocorticotropa de la región anterior de la hipófisis, y esta estimula la secreción de cortisol de la zona fasciculada de la corteza adrenal 4 .…”
