Psychometric Analyses of the Problem-Focused Style of Coping (PF-SOC) Scale With Taiwanese Samples

Abstract: The current research comprises two samples that investigated the psychometric properties of the Problem-Focused Style of Coping (PF-SOC; Heppner, Cook, Wright, & Johnson) scale using two Taiwanese samples. In Sample 1 (N = 809), we investigated the structural dimensions of the PF-SOC using a principal component analysis (PCA) and confirmed three similar components of Taiwanese coping styles: Reflective, Suppressive, and Reactive. We also examined its psychometric properties and reported that the Taiwanese PF-S… Show more

“…Reduced career decision‐making difficulties means individuals have increased certainty to make a career decision. Given reactive coping describes a tendency to have strong emotional responses, distortion, and impulsivity (Chang et al., 2012), female Chinese college students may experience reduced career decision‐making difficulties through impulsively choosing their career paths based on strong emotional responses. They may settle for less without carefully examining their options or contemplating possible long‐term consequences of their decisions (e.g., career dissatisfaction).…”

“…Reliability estimates (Cronbach's coefficient α s) for the three factors were moderate, ranging from 0.65 to 0.71. The current study used the 13‐item Chinese‐based PF‐SOC, which was initially revised using a Taiwanese sample (Chang et al., 2012), and then replicated using a Chinese sample (He, 2011). The Chinese‐based PF‐SOC also consists of three factors with same names.…”

“…The inventory contains three factors: Reflective Style, Suppressive Style, and Reactive Style. We used the 13-item Chinese-based three-factor PF-SOC utilizing Taiwanese samples (Chang, Lan, Lin, & Heppner, 2012) and replicated by He (2011); the PF-SOC was moderately correlated with other coping measures and psychological adjustment in Chinese cultures. The alpha coefficients in the study ranged from .62 to .71.…”
