Psychometric approach of the revised illness perception questionnaire for oral health (IPQ‐R‐OH) in patients with periodontal disease

Abstract: These findings suggest that the IPQ-R-OH has adequate reliability and construct factorial validity; therefore, it could be a valuable instrument in screening illness perceptions in patients with periodontal disease.

“…These results demonstrate that Brief‐IPQ has good overall validity and reliability for use among adult patients with PDs (Cronbach's alpha value of 0.80), being in agreement with the original Brief‐IPQ study (Broadbent et al, ) and within the range of similar chronic diseases researches (Abubakari et al, ; Ashley et al, ). The factorial invariance concerning gender was also confirmed showing, therefore, that the Brief‐IPQ is a reliable instrument to both genders, similarly to previous reports that have employed the IPQ‐Revised questionnaire (Mafla et al, ; Villalobos‐Galvis et al, ).…”

“…The length of questionnaires has a considerable response rate burden resulting in considerable non-response rates (Rolstad, Adler, & Rydén, 2011). Consequently, long questionnaires may have poor interest in the daily clinical practice, and for this purpose, this shortform may be more suitable for patients with this condition (Mafla et al, 2019).…”

“…Finally, all CSM factors formed unidimensional scales, an important finding since it validates the calculation of summative factor scores. More recently [32, 33], a revised Illness Perception Questionnaire for Oral Health (IPQ-R-OH) has been developed in Spanish for adults 18 years or older with caries and periodontal disease. The IPQ-R-OH was reported to have acceptable construct validity and reliability, however, this is not an integrated measure specific for older adults.…”

“…Illness representation is a cognitive and emotional‐based construct through direct and indirect personal experiences, as well as the information received from the social environment and health professionals (Leventhal et al, 1992). Recently, the Illness Perception Questionnaire‐Revised‐Oral Health (IPQ‐R‐OH) and the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (Brief‐IPQ) were successfully validated for patients with periodontal disease (Machado et al., 2019; Mafla, Herrera‐López, & Villalobos‐Galvis, 2018). In particular, the Brief‐IPQ showed acceptable reliability, construct factorial validity and invariance across gender making this short questionnaire a pertinent and beneficial instrument to determine periodontal disease perception (Machado et al., 2019).…”
