Psychometric Assessment of the Short Grit Scale Among Chinese Adolescents

Abstract: This study sought to validate the Short Grit Scale (Grit-S), an instrument that measures perseverance and passion for long-term goals, among Chinese high school students. Confirmatory factor analyses revealed that the scale retains the two-factor structure of the original scale. The scale demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency and test–retest reliability. Evidence for construct validity was found in relation to the Big Five personality traits, self-control, and IQ. Evidence for criterion validity was f… Show more

“…In the two grit scales, grit is presented in a hierarchical model—overall grit level is presented as a higher‐order construct and two facets (consistency of interest and perseverance of effort) are presented at the second level. This two‐factor structure of grit has been corroborated with both quantitative and qualitative approaches with various samples (e.g., Christensen & Knezek, ; Datu, Yuen, & Chen, ; Li et al, ).…”

“…Most of the articles reported a cross‐sectional design (34 articles), followed by an experimental design (five articles; Cross, ; Farroll, ; Flanagan & Einarson, ; Kelly, Matthews, & Bartone, ; Wang et al, ), and a longitudinal design (five articles; Duckworth & Quinn, ; Duckworth et al, ; Li et al, ; Saunders‐Scott, Braley, & Stennes‐Spidahl, ; Zurlo, ).…”

“…In total, 234 healthy 12th‐grade students (122 females; mean age = 18.60 ± 0.78 years) from five local public high schools participated in this study, which is a part of our ongoing project to investigate the neurobiological substrates of adolescents' personality traits, well‐being and academic achievement in Chengdu, China (Li et al, ; Wang, Kong, et al, ; Wang, Xu, et al, ; Wang, Dai, et al, ; Wang, Zhao, et al, ). Seventeen participants were excluded because of incidental MRI findings (i.e., unusual cysts, three participants) or a lack of behavioral data (14 participants); thus, 217 participants (110 females; mean age = 18.50 ± 0.55 years) were included in our data analyses.…”

“…This scale includes two dimensions: perseverance of effort (e.g., “Setbacks don’t discourage me”) and consistency of interest (e.g., “My interests change from year to year”, reverse coded). Li and colleagues (2016) have validated the reliability and validity of this scale for Chinese participants. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for Study 1 and Study 2 were 0.76 and 0.82, respectively.…”
