Psychometric evaluation of self‐report measures of binge‐eating symptoms and related psychopathology: A systematic review of the literature

Abstract: Most of the included measures had evidence for some adequate psychometric properties. Two measures received six out of nine positive ratings for the assessed psychometric properties, the BITE and the BULIT-R, and thus appear to be the measures with the most evidence of their validity and reliability. Overall, our findings implicate a need for further investigation of the psychometric properties of the available self-report questionnaires in this field.

“…For the purpose of assessing the EBQ’s construct validity and relevance to binge eating, the test battery consisted of measures that are known to correlate with binge eating and/or eating disorder severity [3, 4, 8, 10, 19]. Together, these measures assessed body mass (BMI), overall mood and distress (Depression Anxiety Stress Scales; DASS-21), eating disorder symptoms and related behaviours (EDE-Q and DEBQ), eating disorder related cognitions (EDE-Q and EDBQ), negative core-beliefs (Eating Disorders Core Beliefs Questionnaire; ED-CBQ) and poor distress tolerance (Difficulty in Emotion Regulation Scale; DERS).…”

“…Binge eating is typically assessed via questionnaire or semi-structured interview, both of which require respondents to recall what and how much they ate over the past 1–6 months (12) . While some assessments may be more appropriate for BS patients than others due to their comprehensive assessment of LOC and overeating constructs, even the most well-validated instruments have modest reliability in the assessment of binge eating, particularly SBE (12) .…”

“…While some assessments may be more appropriate for BS patients than others due to their comprehensive assessment of LOC and overeating constructs, even the most well-validated instruments have modest reliability in the assessment of binge eating, particularly SBE (12) . Compounding these general measurement issues, individuals presenting for BS may feel compelled to conceal binge eating problems due to concerns about being rejected for BS or having to complete additional pre-surgical requirements (e.g., counseling).…”
