“…Instruments to measure helping relationships have been developed based on professional healthcare providers’ inputs, but few of them have explored family or friends as supporting patients’ health behaviors. The instruments related to exploring helping relationships are the following: the Helping Relationship Inventory (HRI) studies the strength of the helping relationship from the perspective of clients in a social work practice (Poulin & Young, 1997); the Chinese version of the Fear of Intimacy with Helping Professionals scale (FIHP) assesses a comfortable helping relationship between the patient and social worker (Lau & Chan, 2018); Social Support for Diet and Exercise Behaviors (SSDE) measures family- and friend-delivered positive and negative support to facilitate diet and exercise habits (Sallis et al, 1987); the Partner Interaction Questionnaire-20 (PIQ-20) (Cohen & Lichtenstein, 1990) assesses positive and negative behaviors provided by a spouse or romantic partner, close friend, or family member for quitting smoking.
