Psychometric evidence for the Leisure Interest Questionnaire and analyses of the structure of leisure interests.

Abstract: This study provides evidence of reliability and validity for the Leisure Interest Questionnaire (LIQ; J. C. Hansen, 1998). Undergraduate students completed the LIQ and Strong Interest Inventory (SII; E. K. Strong Jr., 1927) at Time 1 and the LIQ 5 weeks later. The internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the LIQ scales were calculated. Evidence of construct validity was inferred from (a) intercorrelations among the LIQ scales and (b) correlations between LIQ and SII. A second sample of undergraduate… Show more

“…The interests questions yielded a factor structure of interests similar to those found elsewhere (Hansen & Scullard, 2002), with one factor relating to the arts and aesthetics, another related to technology and another relating to physical pursuits and the outdoors. Women had stronger aesthetic interests and men stronger interests in technology, in accordance with previous findings (Twenge, 1999).…”

“…In addition, participants were asked to rate their degree of interest in a list of activities or fields. These were chosen from a survey of previous work (Hansen & Scullard, 2002; Twenge, 1999) to produce a reasonably concise set where all items would have a roughly equal frequency of being endorsed.…”

“…Since vocational and family commitment increases in importance during young adulthood, interest in hunting may be given a lower priority, or it may become substituted by related activities that may satisfy the same underlying needs. Although a high short-term stability for hunting and fishing interests have been found (Hansen & Sullard, 2002), research on the influence of marriage and parenthood indicates that these events increase the extent to which leisure behavior is performed at home (and that young females more than young men decrease or drop leisure activities; reviewed by Raymore, Barber, & Eccles, 2001). However, in childhood and early adolescence, absolute stability of interest scores very often increase (Tracey & Sodano, 2008), a finding of importance to the fact that starting hunting at a young age leads to a more permanent hunting interest, compared with a later initiation into hunting.…”
