Psychometric properties of a Spanish-language version of the Short Inventory of Problems.

Abstract: Hispanic Americans are substantially under-represented in clinical and research samples for substance use treatment, with language cited as one of the major barriers to their participation, indicating a need for more validated assessments in Spanish. This study evaluated the psychometric properties of a Spanish version of the Short Inventory of Problems (SIP), used in a multisite, randomized trial conducted for Spanish-speaking substance users. The sample included 405 Spanish-speaking treatment seekers, mostly… Show more

“…This measure assesses the patient's perception of adverse consequences of his/her substance use in a period of 3 months prior to the assessment date. This scale has a good internal consistency (alpha = 0.96) and showed to have construct validity through correlations with scores from the ASI (Kiluk et al, 2013). Scores higher than mean for each negative consequence were classified as "problem" in this study.…”

“…A five-factor model with a version of the SIP-R ( 28 ) showed acceptable goodness-of-fit (χ 2 = 708.03; df = 85; CFI = 94; RMSEA = 0.09). For this study, we used a Spanish-language version adapted in Hispanic Americans ( 29 ). This variable was also used as a measure of severity of substance use in the main analysis.…”

“…The SIP-R is a 17-item self-report scale that assesses the frequency of negative consequences of drug and alcohol use in the past three months through a 4-point Likert scale that ranges from “never” to “almost daily.” In addition to a total score, the SIP-R also produces five sub-scale scores (interpersonal, intrapersonal, physical, impulse control and social). Its psychometric properties are reported elsewhere (Kiluk et al, 2013).…”
