Psychometric Properties of Figure Rating Scales in Children: The Impact of Figure Ordering

Abstract: This study examined psychometric properties of figure rating scales, particularly the effects of ascending silhouette ordering, in 153 children, 9 to 13 years old. Two versions of Collins's (1991) figural rating scale were presented: the original scale (figures arranged ascendingly) and a modified version (randomized figure ordering). Ratings of current and ideal figure were elicited and body dissatisfaction was calculated. All children were randomly assigned to one of two subgroups and completed both scale ve… Show more

“…This scale was selected as it is a simple visual tool, which requires less verbal fluency for comprehension compared with questionnaires and has been used widely across cultures, languages, and regions (Swami et al, 2010). Figure Rating Scales indicate good construct and test–retest reliability among children and adolescents (Truby & Paxton, 2002; Zitzmann & Warschburger, 2020). ” Degree of dissatisfaction is indicated by the discrepancy value between the individual's perceived and desired figure.…”

“…The scale consists of 9 contours, ranging from very thin (assignment of 1) to very obesity (assignment of 9) [23]. Studies have shown that a valid measurement of body satisfaction could be generated with this scale even in younger children [24,25]. Participants were asked what they thought of their current silhouette or "how do you look like" (self-perceived body image) and which one they wanted their body to look like (ideal body image) by choosing a score [26], respectively.…”

“…The third contribution was the use of BD subscale of EDI-2, as the majority of studies used the stunkard figure rating scale silhouette [ 10 , 16 , 26 , 73 ] which the arrangement of figure may cause reporting bias toward thinner Fig. [ 82 ]. The figure rating scale silhouette has been used worldwide to screen for eating disorders in the general population including BD, as well as in clinical evaluations [ 83 ].…”
