Introduction: Covid-19 pandemic and its ensuing effects on mental wellbeing made it clearer than ever that social bonds are critical for survival, flourishing and mental wellbeing. Experimental research with children and adults shows that activities that involve rhythmic joint action, such as dance, can facilitate social bonds.Methods: Building on these laboratory findings, this study examined whether group dance has positive effects on social bonding and wellbeing in a real-life, online intervention setting using a randomised control design. Participants were 58 UK adolescents aged 11 to 16 years old (N = 52 girls, 75% White, 7% Asian/Asian British, 18% Mixed-Other), randomly assigned to an intervention or waitlist control group. Participants in the intervention group completed an online 5-week hip-hop dance programme during the Covid-19 pandemic in January – February 2021. Measures of social bonding, wellbeing and future orientation were taken at the beginning (T1) and at the end (T2) of the programme.Results: Linear mixed model analyses on the longitudinal data showed a greater increase in social bonding and wellbeing for participants in the intervention group (all p < .0001). Moreover, increases in bonding significantly predicted increases in wellbeing (p < .0001), and increases in bonding and wellbeing significantly predicted increases in the adolescents’ hope about the future.Conclusions: These data, collected at a time of mass social isolation during Covid-19, show that a 5-week-long online dance activity can help adolescents forge stronger social bonds, resulting in improved wellbeing and positive outlook.

Objetivo: El presente estudio tuvo por objetivo analizar cuál es el peso relativo de la satisfacción con la vida y el bienestar psicológico en la predicción del florecimiento de los adolescentes, evaluando a su vez el perfil de florecimiento en función del grado de satisfacción con la vida y de los niveles de cada uno de los aspectos del bienestar. Metodología: A partir de un muestreo no probabilístico participaron 421 adolescentes argentinos (Medad = 14,9; DE = 1,75), quienes respondieron la Escala Perfil PERMA (Waigel & Lemos, 2023), la Escala de Bienestar Psicológico de Ryff (Meier & Oros, 2019) y la Escala de Satisfacción con la vida (Castro Solano, 2000). Los datos se analizaron mediante análisis de regresión jerárquica y análisis multivariados de variancia (MANOVAs). Resultados: Los hallazgos indican que tanto la satisfacción con la vida como el bienestar psicológico predicen significativamente el florecimiento de los adolescentes. El modelo explica un 65,5 % de la variancia, destacándose el peso predictivo de los aspectos hedónicos. Además, existen diferencias en el perfil general de florecimiento en función del nivel de satisfacción con la vida y de algunas de las dimensiones del bienestar psicológico. Conclusión: Se destaca la importancia de diseñar intervenciones que contemplen los predictores con mayor incidencia sobre la prosperidad durante la adolescencia. Asimismo, se sugiere profundizar en el estudio de los precursores del florecimiento para consolidar la ciencia del florecimiento.

Our findings suggest that the wellbeing and future orientation benefits of group dance may stem from having stronger social connectedness, opening up avenues for future research and interventions.
