Psychometric properties of Short Form-36 Health Survey, EuroQol 5-dimensions, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale in patients with chronic pain

Abstract: Recent research has highlighted a need for the psychometric evaluation of instruments targeting core domains of the pain experience in chronic pain populations. In this study, the measurement properties of Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36),EuroQol 5-dimensions (EQ-5D) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were analyzed within the item response-theory framework based on data from 35,908 patients. To assess the structural validity of these instruments, the empirical representations of several concep… Show more

“…Each subscale of HADS, HADS-anxiety and HADS-depression, consist of seven items and scores from 0 to 21. In this study, the results from the two subscales were summarized and presented as the total score of HADS, hence, to indicate psychological distress 67 . The total HADS score was divided into three categories according to the original case definition based on the separate anxiety and depression scale 65 : normal psychological distress (< 14), mild psychological distress (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20), and moderate psychological distress (> 21).…”

“…41 HADS has been shown to be a valid and reliable measure of overall emotional distress in patients with chronic pain. 42 A second examiner (LD), who was masked as to patients' treatment, will perform the baseline measure of primary and secondary outcomes and independently collect data at the end of treatment (3 months after the start) and at 6 months after the start of treatment. Patients' timeline is shown in figure 1.…”

“…The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) comprises seven items in each of the two subscales: depression (HADS-D) and anxiety (HADS-A) symptoms [40,41]. Both subscale scores range from 0 to 21 and were combined to indicate the extent of psychological distress (HADS total, 0-42) [42].…”
