Psychometric properties of the awareness questionnaire, patient competency rating scale and Dysexecutive Questionnaire in patients with acquired brain injury

Abstract: Overall, the total scale scores of patient forms of all questionnaires demonstrated sufficient psychometric properties. Psychometric properties of subscales are questionable. We could not replicate the factor structures of AQ, PCRS and DEX: the items within subscales differed with previous findings. Additional research into the test-retest, inter-rater reliability and responsiveness of relative and clinician forms is required.

“…Larger discrepancy scores indicate greater impairment of self‐awareness. Construct validity has been established for the three domains of the AQ through factor analysis (Hellebrekers et al, ; Sherer et al, ), and good concordance with the Self‐Awareness of Deficits Interview (Fleming et al, ) has been established (Ownsworth, Fleming, Doig, Shum, & Swan, ). The AQ also has moderate test‐retest reliability ( r s = 0.80) and good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.88) for participant forms (Hellebrekers et al, ).…”

“…Awareness Questionnaire (AQ) (Sherer et al, 1998). The AQ is one of the most commonly used measures of self-awareness after TBI (Hellebrekers et al, 2017). It is a 17-item questionnaire that assesses intellectual awareness post-TBI.…”

“…Second, the administration of long questionnaires, particularly the BDEFS, might be inconvenient in clinical and research contexts where time is limited and participants become exhausted (Shultz & Whitney, 2005). Third, most studies were conducted in clinical populations using small, nonrepresentative samples (Hellebrekers, Winkens, Kruiper, & Van Heugten, 2017). Fourth, the factorial structures are ambiguous and few studies report CFA, reliability and validity.…”

“…Each item was rated on a 5-point Likert scale with higher scores indicating better competences. We used the PCRS total score that was found to have adequate psychometric properties when used in individuals with cognitive impairment and brain dysfunction [ 31 ].…”
