Psychometric properties of the Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale: A Spanish-Language Version in a community sample of puerto rican adults.

Abstract: Performance-based measures have shown some limitation in the assessment of Executive Functions (EF) and rating scales have been proposed as an alternative. Our aim was to conduct a comprehensive psychometric evaluation of the Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale (BDEFS), as administered in 452 Latino community adults (65.5% female). The BDEFS was back-translated into Spanish. We performed exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to assess the structure of the translated BDEFS and to compare it with the ori… Show more

“…Our findings also highlight the significance of using rating scale-based measures and performance-based (behavioral) tests jointly. Since many rating scales are theoretically and empirically based on one another [for example, a popular measure BDEFS was based off of the BDEFS-CA ( Allee-Smith et al, 2013 )], different rating scales are often inter-correlated by design. Moreover, the subjective interpretation of the questionnaire-based assessment is not always consistent.…”

“…One plausible mechanism for the prospective relation between maltreatment and ADHD considers the potential influence of parental or caretaker's behaviour on the course of symptoms. Self-regulation is a key component of ADHD, as part of the executive dysfunction that characterizes the disorder [49,50], and maladaptive parenting and abuse can disrupt the child's ability to regulate themselves [51]. Disruptions in self-regulation may be at the core of the link between early maltreatment and psychiatric symptoms [26,27].…”

“…Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) starts before the age of 12 years and is characterised by symptoms of inattention, excessive physical activity and impulsivity (American Psychiatric Association, ) as well as executive dysfunction (Velez‐Pastrana et al, ). The estimated prevalence of ADHD among adults in the USA is 4.4% (Kessler et al, ); worldwide, the estimated prevalence according to meta‐analysis is 2.5% (Simon et al, ).…”
