Psychometric properties of the Brief Pain Inventory among patients with osteoarthritis undergoing total hip replacement surgery

Abstract: BackgroundPain is a cardinal symptom of osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip and important for deciding when to operate. This study assessed the internal consistency reliability, validity and responsiveness of the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) among patients with OA undergoing total hip replacement (THR).MethodsWe prospectively included 250 of 356 patients who were accepted to the waiting list for primary THR surgery. All participants responded to the BPI, WOMAC and SF-36 at baseline and 1 year after surgery.ResultsInt… Show more

“…The BPI-SF assesses presence of pain, intensity of pain, current treatments being used, perceived pain relief from treatments, and extent that pain interferes with daily living (Kapstad, Rokne, & Stavem, 2010; Mendoza, Mayne, Rublee, & Cleeland, 2006). The 15-item BPI-SF was developed for cancer pain patients, but has shown consistent validity and reliability for many conditions (Kumar, 2011).…”

“…The BPI-SF assesses intensity of pain, and extent that pain interferes with social and physical function. 15 Scores for the 4 intensity items and 7 interference items are averaged to derive a single score value each for pain intensity and pain interference. The 15-item BPI-SF has shown consistent validity and reliability for many conditions.…”
