Psychometric Properties of the CES-D-10 in a Psychiatric Sample

Abstract: The 10-item Center for the Epidemiological Studies of Depression Short Form (CES-D-10) is a widely used measure to screen for depression in primary care settings. The 10-item measure has demonstrated strong psychometric properties, including predictive accuracy and high correlations with the original 20-item version, in community populations. However, clinical utility and psychometric properties have yet to be assessed in an acutely symptomatic psychiatric population. This study examined the psychometric prope… Show more

“…Instructions were modified for daily interims and discharge to query about the last 24 h. Items are summed for a total score and higher scores suggest greater symptom severity. Studies suggest that the CES-D-10 has strong psychometric properties (Andresen et al, 1994;Bj€ orgvinsson, Kertz, Bigda-Peyton, McCoy, & Aderka, 2013;Cheng, Chan, & Fung, 2006;Irwin, Artin, & Oxman, 1999). The CES-D-10 had high internal consistency in this study (a ¼ .86, M ¼ 12.41, SD ¼ 6.14).…”

“…These two questionnaires have been selected because they are relatively simple to use by non-psychologically trained personnel, fast, and have been validated elsewhere in other studies. 36,37 The CES-D (Supplementary Table 2) is a measure to screen for current depressive symptoms in adults and adolescents. 38 It is a 20-item questionnaire.…”

We also evaluated the index for depression measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D10) that is a widely used tool to screen for depression (Bjorgvinsson et al 2013). …”
