Psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire parent form

Abstract: The Alabama Parenting Questionnaire parent form (APQ-P) is one of the most commonly used measures to assess parenting practices. The current study evaluated the psychometric properties of the APQ-P using a community sample of 499 Portuguese mothers of children and adolescents aged 10 to 17 years. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed adequate psychometric properties of a three-factor model (positive parenting, ineffective parenting, and poor monitoring) in a solution of 20-items. After comparing the three-fact… Show more

“…Święcicka et al (2019) found acceptable values for Tucker–Lewis index (TLI) and comparative fit index (CFI; i.e., >.90) for mother report but questionable ones for the father report (i.e., >.82). Nogueira et al (2020) obtained analogous values for CFI and TLI (i.e., >.81) for the Parent Global Report. Although some steps were made in the study of the original model of APQ–Parent Global Report, no study has assessed via confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) the original model of APQ-lg for the Child Global Report.…”

“…Russell et al (2016), on a relatively small sample size (i.e., N = 255), found that the five-factor model of APQ-lg is approximatively equivalent across age (<12 vs. ≥12 years) and informant (child vs. parent reports). Nogueira et al (2020) investigated the measurement invariance-Parent Global Report-across the age of children (i.e., <14 vs. ≥14 years). They supported the partial measurement invariance of APQ-lg across the age of children.…”

“…Higher scores in the positive parenting and parental involvement subscales indicate more suitable parenting practices, whereas higher scores in the remaining subscales suggest less adequate parental strategies (Thulin et al, 2019 ). This measure was translated and adapted for several languages and countries (e.g., Escribano et al, 2013 ; Graham & Weems, 2015 ; Nogueira et al, 2020 ; Shelton et al, 1996 ; Thulin et al, 2019 ), generally presenting good to excellent psychometric properties (Thulin et al, 2019 ), that were also observed in the current study: parental involvement (α = 0.89); positive parenting (α = 0.85); corporal punishment (α = 0.75); poor supervision (α = 0.67) and inconsistent discipline (α = 0.60).…”

“…Alabama Parenting Questionnaire (APQ) [34]. The APQ Portuguese version [35] was used to assess parenting practices. It contains 42 items rated on a 5-point Likert scale based on a parent's appraisal of their behavior frequency, ranging from 1 ("never") to 5 ("always").…”
