Psychometric Properties of the STAT for Early Autism Screening

Abstract: The STAT is an interactive screening measure for autism that assesses behaviors in the areas of play, communication, and imitation skills. In Study 1, signal detection procedures were employed to identify a cutoff score for the STAT using developmentally matched groups of 2-year-old children with autism and with nonspectrum disorders. The resulting cutoff yielded high sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values for the development sample as well as for an independent validation sample. Study 2 examined psy… Show more

“…60 ± .07 for the M-CHAT alone, and .76 ± .07 for the M-CHAT plus telephone interview. Furthermore, the threshold for failing the screener was set low to avoid as many misses as possible, at the expense of positive predictive power; practitioners should be aware of this fact and might consider an intermediate type of evaluation, such as the Screening Tool for Autism in 2-Year-olds (Stone et al 2004), or their own clinical assessment, before referring children with a borderline score for a full, specialized work-up.…”

“…39 Recent data indicate that the STAT may also have utility in younger toddlers aged 14 to 23 months, although additional data are needed for this age group. 40 Although the STAT requires a higher level of expertise to administer than parent questionnaires such as the M-CHAT, a recent study provided evidence of the effectiveness of Web-based training of community services providers of various professional backgrounds; this training could enhance the feasibility of the STAT.…”

“…Other promising screening instruments include the Pervasive Developmental Disorders Screening Test-II 37 and the Screening Tool for Autism in Two-Year Olds. 38 For children who are 4 years or older, the Social Communication Questionnaire may be used as an autism screening instrument. 7,27,28 Children with autism can also be identified by a characteristic early developmental profile, with relative strengths in visuomotor problem solving and discrepant and disproportionate weaknesses in language.…”
