Psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Fagerström test for nicotine dependence

Abstract: Analyses confirmed that the Turkish version of the FTND has a two-factor structure with moderate reliability. This study found that using a total score as an estimate of nicotine dependence may limit the assessment of specific smoking dependency and tailoring intervention approaches. We suggest that a two-factor FTND in clinical practice would more accurately determine the nicotine dependence of patients.

“…However, other studies reported lower reliability (0.56) assessed within 10–14 days of the time interval. [ 18 ] Whereas higher reliability was found for FNTD (0.82) in comparison with Minnesota Nicotine Withdrawal Scale (MNWS) (0.64), Tiffany questionnaire for Smoking Urges (T-QSU) F1 (0.79), and T-QSU F 2 (0.81) in assessing smokers without psychotic symptoms. “…Test-retest reliability studies demonstrate high stability of FTND scores over weeks to months. 18,19 When looking for brain-behaviour associations, it is important to consider the temporality of the chosen metric. Anatomical MRI scans allow estimating structural measures such as gyrification, white matter integrity, or subcortical volumes.…”

“…We collected the data using a 12-item sociodemographic information form, a 20-item literature-grounded survey to measure tobacco smoking and e-cigarette use among the participants (15,16,17), and the 6-item Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND). (2015) calculated its Cronbach's alpha coefficient to be 0.58 (18).…”
