Psychometric Properties of WISC-IV Verbal Scales: A Study of Students in China Who Are Blind

Abstract: Introduction: Numerous studies have investigated the use of Wechsler tests on individuals with visual impairments. However, few studies have examined the utilization of the fourth edition of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV) for such individuals. This study investigated the reliability and validity of the WISC-IV Verbal Scales’ (i.e., the Verbal Comprehension Index [VCI] and the Working Memory Index [WMI]) scores for children with blindness in China. Methods: One hundred children with blin… Show more

“…Further, in digit span sub-test, visually impaired children have slightly higher average compared to the non-visually impaired children. This may indicate that visually impaired children has stronger memory as noted by Chen et al (2021) that visually impaired children show good WMI (Working Memory Index) because they are trained with listening habits in their daily activities where they rely more on their auditory to understand the world around them. Poljan et al (2000) also noted that visually impaired children depend on their ability to process information, performance, and memory.…”

“…Using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Version V, [ 13 ] 2 specially trained therapists from the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine who have obtained the intelligence assessment qualification of Wechsler will conduct the intelligence quotient (IQ) test according to the standard methods stipulated in the test manual. The scale includes 4 indexes of speech comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory and processing speed, among which verbal comprehension and perceptual reasoning are the general ability index and working memory and processing speed are the cognitive efficiency index.…”

“…El índice de VP permite realizar mediciones de las destrezas de focalización atencional, exploración, ordenamiento y discriminación de datos visuales de manera rápida; a la muestra se le suministraron las pruebas de Búsqueda de Símbolos, Claves. La escala tiene una validez de contenido y confiabilidad por mitades (Chen et al, 2021).…”
