Psychometric validation of the Stoma-QOL questionnaire in a Canadian cross-sectional sample of colostomy and ileostomy patients

Abstract: The Stoma-QOL questionnaire is a well-designed PRO for measuring stoma-related quality of life. Demographic variables do not appear to have a strong influence on Stoma-QOL scores. Item 9 demonstrated misfit but removal likely does not improve the instrument. Future research should focus on revising items 6, 8, 16, and 17.

“…The effect of demographic variables on overall quality of life and adjustment of stoma patients provided a different perspective on outcomes as a result of the differences in participants included in prior studies (Chao et al, ; Karabulut et al, ; Lai et al, ; Li et al, ). The demographic attributes in this study did not have significant effects on overall scores of stress.…”

“…The results of previous studies presented illustrate that potential contribution to the psychosocial adjustment depends on a number of factors, including age, gender, marital status, educational level, disease duration, stoma nature, stoma duration, cancer stage, income change after surgery, self-rated disease severity, time since surgery and spiritual well-being (Chao, Tsai, Livneh, Lee, & Hsieh, 2010;Karabulut, Dinc, & Karadag, 2014;Li et al, 2012). Additionally, in one study, the quality of life of 120 Canadian colostomy and ileostomy patients was surveyed based on the Stoma-QOL questionnaire and demographic attributes did not appear to have a strong influence on Stoma-QOL (Lai et al, 2018). Patients' and their family members' antipathy towards their stoma and spouse's acceptance of the ostomy were positively correlated with adjustment level in colostomy patients (Hu et al, 2014).…”

“…It has been used to evaluate stoma-related QOL in other non-European populations. 23,[31][32][33][34][35][36] Because the Stoma-QOL has a validated Spanish translation 29 and specifically measures the HRQOL related to living with an ostomy, we chose this instrument for our study.…”

“…The sample size for the psychometric analysis was determined based on the recommendation of a sample of 10 participants per item (Lai et al, 2018) and in consideration of missing responses. Two hundred twenty-three eligible patients were recruited, and 213 of them completed the questionnaires carefully.…”

“…The Stoma‐QOL is a reliable and effective measuring instrument used worldwide (Crespo et al, 2010; Lai et al, 2018; Liao & Qin, 2014). However, currently, there is a lack of evidence regarding the psychometric properties of the Chinese version.…”
